"A powerful and moving story about a tradition that has no place in the modern world" – Mark Adams
Our newly released documentary, Slave Island, has been reviewed by Mark Adams from Business Doc Europe.
He sees Slave Island as a powerful and disturbing documentary that exposes the harsh reality of slavery still happening in Sumba. The film shows how deep-rooted traditions allow this practice to continue, with ‘master’ openly defending his right to own slaves. Filmmaker Jeremy Kewuan not only documents the suffering of three enslaved children—Witta, Rangga, and Kedo—but also becomes personally involved in their fate.
Adams is especially moved by the film’s mix of intense moments and quiet reflection, using close-ups and wide shots to add emotional depth. Witta’s disappearance and Kewuan’s desperate search for her make the story even more gripping. In the end, the reviewer sees Slave Island as an important and emotional film that exposes a hidden injustice while offering hope for change.
